Driving through town on a Sunday
afternoon, about 12:15pm, I saw a red pickup truck with American and
Confederate flags attached to its bed.
As I followed a few cars behind, I considered the debate between
heritage and intimidation. Growing up in Kentucky, I am sure about my
understanding of the debate: the use of the Confederate flag is a provocation.
Therefore, in my mind, it is no coincidence that the truck turned onto a small
side street where the borough’s only A.M.E. church is located. Not
coincidentally, as well, it was about the same time as church services were
ending throughout the borough.
